Green Building Incentives And The EPACT 179D Program

It is important to realize that the United States government, as well as many state governments, offers a range of different programs and incentives that encourage businesses and commercial property owners and leaseholders to reduce the amount of fossil fuels and electric energy that they use. One such program is the EPACT 179D deduction, which is not technically a LEED program but it creates the same incentive to reduce the use of energy within three specific building subsystems.

What is the Commercial Building Tax Deduction?

The 2005 Energy Policy Act offers business owners a commercial building tax deduction if they utilize the various methods available to decrease their lighting usage, as well as their heating, cooling and building envelope. The full benefit equals $1.80 per square foot for the lighting deduction. There are also partial benefits for heating, cooling, building envelope and lighting in the amount of $0.60 per square foot. There are various requirements that must be followed to claim the deduction, however.
